Tofino Salmon Fishing Remains Open for Business
As we have always have been, Tofino Resort + Marina remains committed to conservation of our wild salmon stocks, and applauds any progress that helps protect these beautiful fish. Recently, the Federal Government implemented Chinook salmon closures across the south coast of British Columbia to reduce the impact on returning Fraser River Chinook stocks.
As near-shore West Coast Vancouver Island fisheries (Tofino and surrounding areas) were shown to have zero impact on early run Fraser River Chinook by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) modeling, Tofino and Clayoquot Sound (Area 24) will remain open up to one nautical mile offshore of the surf line. DFO has imposed a Chinook non-retention regulation until July 14th, 2019 anywhere outside this one-mile closure zone. Normal regulations (two Chinook per day, four in possession) will resume July 15th, 2019 in off-shore waters. Please check all DFO waypoints for clarification of the closure area.
Tofino Resort + Marina is proud of our role in the conservation and stewardship world. This fishing season, we will continue to offer guided fishing trips in the stunning waters of the Clayoquot and beyond, and—as always—we will support and recommend catch-and-release for larger fish. These keystone members remain an integral source of strength to existing fish stocks. Keep ‘em wet. Keep ‘em strong.
From offshore saltwater missions to the pristine nooks and crannies of the Clayoquot’s river systems, we know this corner of British Columbia well, and cannot wait to share it with you.
