Every fall, something remarkable happens along the West Coast: the salmon run.

After spending months (or years) out in the Pacific, salmon begin making their way back toward freshwater. They navigate coastal waters, enter rivers and streams, and swim upstream toward the places where their own lives began. It’s an exhausting journey. They face strong currents, waterfalls, predators and changing conditions along the way. But somehow, they find their way home.

And when they arrive, the story doesn’t end with spawning. In many ways, it’s only beginning.

The salmon run is one of the most important ecological events of the year on the West Coast. It feeds bears and eagles, replenishes freshwater ecosystems with nutrients from the ocean, supports the next generation of salmon, and connects ocean, river and forest in one enormous cycle. Here’s what’s really happening when the salmon return to Tofino’s rivers each fall.

It Starts in Freshwater

The salmon we see returning in the fall began their lives in freshwater. Pacific salmon are anadromous, meaning they are born in freshwater, migrate to the ocean to grow, and eventually return to freshwater to reproduce. Different species (including Chinook, Coho, Chum, Pink and Sockeye) have different life histories, but they all share this remarkable connection between river and ocean.

The life cycle begins when adult salmon spawn in gravel beds. A female creates a nest, called a redd, by moving gravel with her tail. She releases thousands of eggs while a nearby male releases milt to fertilize them. The female then covers the eggs with gravel, helping protect them as they develop.

Over the following weeks or months, depending on the species and conditions, the eggs develop beneath the gravel. They hatch as alevin, tiny salmon that still carry a yolk sac for nourishment. Once that yolk sac is absorbed, they emerge from the gravel as fry and begin feeding on tiny aquatic insects and other organisms in the stream. Eventually, the young salmon become smolts.

This is one of the most fascinating transformations in their life. Their bodies undergo physiological changes that allow them to transition from freshwater to saltwater. The silvery young fish head downstream, through estuaries and into the Pacific Ocean.

From River to Ocean

The ocean is where salmon do most of their growing. Depending on the species, salmon can spend months or several years at sea, travelling enormous distances and feeding until they reach maturity. During this time, they become part of a much larger marine food web.

Then something changes.

As they mature, the salmon begin preparing to return to freshwater. And somehow, they know where to go.

How Do Salmon Find Their Way Home?

This is one of the great mysteries (and marvels) of salmon biology.

Pacific salmon have an extraordinary ability to return home to their natal streams, sometimes returning to the same river or even the same area of gravel where they began life. Research indicates that young salmon develop an “odor memory” of their home waters, which helps them navigate back as adults. Scientists also know that salmon use environmental cues such as the Earth’s magnetic field and other sensory information during their migrations. But the important thing is that they aren’t simply swimming upstream randomly. They are returning home.

The Journey Back

Once they reach the coast, salmon begin moving from saltwater into freshwater. This is when the journey becomes particularly demanding. They swim against powerful currents, navigate rapids and waterfalls, and continue upstream toward their spawning grounds. Along the way, they become an important food source for predators including bears, eagles, otters and other wildlife.

Their bodies also begin to change. Their colours become more pronounced, their bodies transform for spawning, and males of some species develop hooked jaws, pronounced teeth or other spawning characteristics.By the time they reach their spawning grounds, they have stopped eating in the same way they did in the ocean. Their energy is now focused on one final purpose: reproduction.

And the cycle begins again.

Then the Salmon Give Back to the Forest

This is where the salmon story gets even more incredible.

After spawning, Pacific salmon die. But their bodies don’t simply disappear. They become part of the ecosystem around them. Salmon spend much of their lives growing in the nutrient-rich ocean. When they return to freshwater and eventually die, they bring those marine-derived nutrients back into rivers and surrounding ecosystems. Their carcasses provide food for wildlife and release nutrients including nitrogen and phosphorus into freshwater habitats.

Think of salmon as a nutrient bridge between the ocean and the forest.
A bear eats a salmon.
An eagle feeds on another.
An otter carries one away.
Whatever remains eventually breaks down and becomes part of the river and surrounding ecosystem. Those nutrients can support aquatic organisms and the next generation of salmon, creating a cycle that connects the Pacific Ocean to freshwater streams and the forests surrounding them.

And that means when you’re watching a salmon move through a river, you’re not watching an isolated species. You’re watching an entire ecosystem at work.

Salmon and the Bigger Food Web

Salmon are often described as a keystone species because of how many other species depend on them.

During the fall run, salmon become an important seasonal food source for wildlife. Bears, eagles, otters and other animals take advantage of the abundance of fish. But their influence extends beyond predators. The nutrients released by salmon after spawning can support organisms in freshwater ecosystems, while the survival of young salmon depends on healthy rivers, streams, estuaries and marine habitats.

In other words, salmon need healthy ecosystems, and healthy ecosystems need salmon.

That connection is particularly important on the West Coast, where salmon link together some of the most productive environments on Earth: ocean, estuary, river and forest.

Salmon and Indigenous Connections to the Coast

For the Nuu-chah-nulth Nations whose territories encompass much of Vancouver Island’s west coast, salmon are far more than an ecological species. They are part of longstanding food systems, economies, cultures and relationships with the lands and waters.

Nuu-chah-nulth communities have relied on salmon and other marine resources for thousands of years. Today, the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council describes salmon as a central food source, economic foundation and part of cultural identity, while emphasizing that protecting salmon is both a right and a responsibility.

That relationship is important context when we talk about salmon conservation. Protecting salmon isn’t simply about protecting a fish. It’s about protecting the rivers where they are born, the ocean where they grow, the food systems and communities connected to them, and the cultural relationships that have existed with these waters since long before Tofino became a tourism destination.

For visitors to Tofino, that can mean approaching the salmon run not simply as something to photograph, but as something to respect.

How You Can Help Protect Salmon
  • Support restoration. Consider supporting local organizations working to protect salmon and coastal ecosystems.
  • Give wildlife space. Observe salmon, bears, eagles and other wildlife from a respectful distance.
  • Stay on designated trails. Protect fragile riverbanks, vegetation and spawning habitat.
  • Keep dogs under control. Keep them leashed where required and away from wildlife and waterways.
  • Leave the river undisturbed. Don’t move rocks or enter sensitive spawning areas.
  • Pack it out. Take all garbage, fishing line and other waste with you.
  • Never feed wildlife. Let animals forage naturally.
  • Choose responsible operators. Look for wildlife and fishing experiences that prioritize conservation and respectful viewing.
