Another year of Canada’s biggest surf competition is taking place at Cox Bay.

The waves are calling, and Canada’s biggest surf event is back. The legendary Rip Curl Shortboard Nationals returns to Canada’s surf capital on May 9-11, 2025. Whether you’re paddling out, cheering from the sand, or just in town for the vibes, Tofino will be buzzing with stoke. Surfers from across the world (mostly North America) will be gathering to compete in one of these categories:

  • Open Shortboard
  • Junior U18 shortboard
  • Junior U16 shortboard
  • Junior U14 shortboard
  • 40+ shortboard
  • Open Longboard (9’+) (longboard Nationals took place on March 29th
The stakes are high.

The event is also part of the CANAM Series, a joint North American surf competition featuring elite women and men from across CANada and the AMericas. Sanctioned by Surf Canada and USA Surfing, this means the level of talent on display is next-level. Expect high-performance surfing, intense heats, and the crowning of the nation’s top shortboarders.

For those competing, this is more than a title—it’s also a chance to earn a spot on Surf Canada’s National Team and potentially represent Canada at the 2025 ISA World Surfing Championships
