
Boat Boss Course
In partnership with Datum Marine Services, this intensive 4-day training program offers hands-on experience for small vessel captains aiming to meet professional marine standards. You’ll master navigation, wave handling, rescue operations, and nighttime driving, all through real-world scenarios. Upon completion, receive a graded report with personalized feedback from certified instructors, ensuring you leave as a confident, capable Boat Boss Captain.

Expected Schedule
Day 1 – Arrival Day
Arrive at any time. Check into your room after 4 p.m. Explore the town, or grab a bite to eat at one of the many local restaurants
Day 2
Meet at 8 a.m. for a morning classroom session. Receive any required gear and get familiar with the boats in the afternoon.
Day 3
Meet at the Marina at 8 a.m. Spend the morning on the water, practicing docking and boat maneuvers. Spend the afternoon putting into practice your chart reading and navigation skills. Return to the dock around 4 p.m.
Day 4
Meet at the Marina around 1 p.m. Spend the afternoon going over beaching and wave mitigation techniques. Return to the dock for dinner and prepare for the night run to Ahousaht. Return to the dock around 9 p.m.
Day 5
Meet at the Marina around 10 a.m. Practice some POB and Search & Rescue.
Return to the dock around 4 p.m. Drop off rental equipment and collect your certificate.
Day 6
Departure day for any that wished to stay the day after the course. Check out is at 11 a.m.

Who is this course for?

Do I need to complete any prior training?
Yes, all participants are still required to have completed their Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) prior to joining the course. Please visit DATUM Marine Services’ website for more information on course dates and locations.

Do I need previous boating experience?
No, the courses are designed to get someone with little or no experience to the required level, but there will also be plenty to keep the more experienced mariners interested!

Where is the classroom session located?
The classroom location on the first day is located a short walk from the resort at 601 Gibson St (Red House, up a steep driveway). The classroom is below the wooden staircase. Start time is 8 a.m. on Day 1.
