At Tofino Resort + Marina, the return on investment isn’t just measured in stays booked or adventures taken.
It’s measured in kelp planted.
In habitats restored.
In the long-term health of the place we call home.
Because here, in the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Region, every decision carries weight.
Travel That Gives Back
What if your trip didn’t just take from a place, but gave something back?
Through our partnership with the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust, every guest contributes 1% of their stay, adventures, and marina experiences to local conservation, research, and education initiatives.
Since 2023, that small percentage has added up to something big:
Over $197,000 invested directly into protecting Clayoquot Sound.
That funding supports organizations doing hands-on, essential work, including:
- Raincoast Education Society
- Redd Fish Restoration Society
- Marine Education and Research Society
- Tofino Salmon Enhancement Society
- Ha’oom Fisheries Society
It’s a quiet shift, from visitor to contributor, but it changes everything.
The Power of a Simple Choice
Some of the most meaningful impact starts with something small.
A sign on the door.
A choice to skip housekeeping.
Through our partnership with Veritree, that one decision helps plant kelp in local waters, rebuilding underwater forests that support marine life, improve water quality, and capture carbon.
So far, that’s meant over 12,000 verified kelp planted along the West Coast.
A single stay can help restore an entire ecosystem.
Why It Matters Here
Tofino isn’t untouched, it’s deeply cared for.
For millennia, the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations have lived in relationship with these lands and waters, stewarding the ecosystems that continue to sustain this region today. Operating here means recognizing that responsibility, and contributing to it in a meaningful way.
Two realities shape how we approach sustainability:
Fresh water is limited.
Tofino relies on a finite freshwater source. Conservation isn’t optional, it’s essential. Small choices, like opting out of housekeeping, help reduce strain on this shared resource.
Marine ecosystems are under pressure.
Kelp forests and coastal habitats are changing, impacting the biodiversity that depends on them. Restoration efforts help support the long-term health of these ecosystems.
This isn’t about preserving a “wild” place, it’s about supporting a living, inhabited, and cared-for one.
Built Into How We Operate
Sustainability here isn’t a headline. It’s the baseline.
As an Ocean Friendly Business alongside Surfrider Foundation Pacific Rim, we’ve rethought the everyday:
- Eliminating single-use plastics
- Switching to refillable and reusable systems
- Choosing compostable materials
- Prioritizing local partnerships
Down at the marina, that mindset continues:
- Foam-free, air-filled dock systems
- No polystyrene waste
- Ongoing captain training to reduce wildlife disturbance
- Regular maintenance to minimize environmental impact
We’re even working toward replacing plastic tubing used in operations with biodegradable alternatives, because the details matter.
Powered by People
None of this happens without our team.
From beach cleanups to hands-on training and education, sustainability isn’t a department, it’s a shared responsibility across our crew.
And it shows up in the guest experience in ways that feel natural, not forced.
Turning Moments Into Movement
Every spring, that energy comes together at Songs for the Sound.
Live music. Local food. A packed waterfront.
And a community rallying behind something bigger than a single night out.
Every ticket, every drink, every auction bid supports the Clayoquot Sustainability Fund, fueling the work that protects this place year-round.
It’s impact, amplified.
Always Moving Forward
We’re not here to claim perfection.
We’re here to keep improving. To keep questioning. To keep finding better ways to operate in a place this special.
Because in a region like this, sustainability isn’t a trend.
It’s a responsibility.
And it’s an opportunity to turn every guest moment into something that lasts far beyond their stay.
