Spring in Tofino means longer days are back, the air feels lighter, and everything starts to look vibrant again.
Spring here is a shift you notice slowly, then all at once. Salmonberry blossoms start popping up along the trails. Cherry blossoms show up around town. The forest turns that deep, fresh green that only really happens this time of year. Out on the water, things start moving again too. Whales are passing through, sea are lions hauling out, and bears are reappearing along the shoreline after winter.
It’s that in-between season where everything is waking up, but it’s still quiet enough to take it in.
You’ve got more space on the beaches. More flexibility with your stay. And way more room to do things without rushing through them.
It’s not polished summer weather every day, and that’s kind of the point. Some mornings are misty, some afternoons surprise you with sun, and the ocean always has something going on.
If you’ve been thinking about coming out, this is when you can do it without the peak season chaos and actually experience the place as it changes week by week.
Wildflowers and Coastal Blooms
Spring in Tofino is when everything starts showing up again.
From March through June, the forest floor fills in fast. Bright yellow skunk cabbage pushes up through wetland areas, salmonberry blossoms start lining the trails, and little pockets of wildflowers pop up along the edges of beaches and boardwalks.
Around town, you’ll catch cherry blossoms right on Campbell Street and Main Street; a perfect addition to a walk through town while visiting artisan local shops.
If you want to see it, slow down and wander:
- Main Street and Campbell Street for cherry blossoms
- Tonquin Beach for that mix of forest and ocean in one walk
- Mackenzie Beach for softer light and an easy shoreline stroll
- Trails through Pacific Rim National Park Reserve where everything feels extra green this time of year
No plan needed. No cost. Just time to look around a bit more than usual.
Wildlife Returns to the Coast
Spring in Tofino is when the coast starts moving again.
Black bears come out of hibernation and head straight for the shoreline. At low tide, you’ll sometimes spot them flipping rocks and foraging for crabs, mussels, and seaweed. It’s one of those things that feels pretty surreal the first time you see it.
Around the same time, herring spawn along the coast, turning sections of the water this milky turquoise. It doesn’t last long, but when it happens, everything shows up. Eagles line the trees, seabirds gather offshore, and the whole place feels a bit louder and more alive.
Out on the water, it’s just as active. Grey whales start passing through on their migration, sea lions and seals haul out along the rocks, and there’s always the chance of spotting orcas and humpbacks if timing lines up and luck is on your side! You’ll often see sea otters floating nearby too, usually on their backs, sometimes one at a time and sometimes in giant rafts.
You can absolutely take this in from shore if you’re patient and in the right place at the right time. But getting out on the water changes things. You cover more ground, you get closer safely and responsibly, and you start to understand how much is actually happening out there.
If you want to experience it this way, our bear watching tours and whale watching tours are a good place to start.
Slow Moments Between Adventures
Not everything in spring in Tofino needs to be planned. Some of the best parts of a trip here are the in-between moments, the ones you kind of stumble into.
Start with a coffee and nowhere to be
- Tofino Coffee Roasting Company, grab a coffee and sit out front on the bench under the cherry blossoms
- Savary Island Pie Company, coffee and something fresh with an ocean view out back
- Chocolate Tofino, hot chocolate, a sweet treat, or gelato to take with you
Get outside
- Beach walks: Wide open sand, changing light, and fewer people around. All beaches are lovely. Tonquin is a great in-town choice, and if you’re up for a little drive, Mackenzie Beach, Chesterman Beach and Cox Bay are all less than 10 minutes from town.
- Bike rides: Rent from Tofino Bike Co and cruise the multi-use path between Tofino and Ucluelet for a bigger bike ride, or ride along Chesterman Beach or Long Beach.
- Surfing: Rent a board from Pacific Surf Co, Live to Surf, or Long Beach Surf Shop. If you’re new to it, Pacific Surf Co also offers lessons
Catch a sunset
- Savary Island Pie Company, easy and right in town
- First Street Dock, quick, central, and underrated
- Tofino Resort + Marina, from the dock, the grass at the top of the property, your harbour view room, or Shelter Restaurant
- Tonquin Beach, short walk, big views
- Chesterman Beach, Mackenzie Beach, Cox Bay
- Pettinger Point, a bit of a longer walk, but so worth it
If the weather shifts, head into the forest
- Trails through Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, extra green, quiet, and at their best this time of year
Nothing here needs to be rushed. That’s kind of the whole point.
Where to Eat
Food is a big part of the day here, especially in spring when things feel a bit slower and you actually have time to sit and enjoy it.
A few spots we keep going back to:
- The Schooner Restaurant: a total classic. It’s been around forever for a reason. Super solid seafood, cozy inside, and one of those places that just always hits
- Tuff City Sushi: really good sushi and one of the best views in town. It’s an easy one to linger at, especially if you time it around sunset
- Shelter Restaurant: right on property at Tofino Resort + Marina, so it’s an easy go-to. Great for a laid-back dinner after being out all day
- Wolf in the Fog: more of a destination dinner. Known for a reason, and the cocktails are unreal
Make the Most of the Season
Spring doesn’t really reward a packed schedule. It’s better when you pick one thing to anchor your day, then leave space around it.
Maybe that looks like getting out on the water in the morning, then spending the rest of the afternoon on the beach or wandering through town. Or taking it slow to start, grabbing a coffee, and heading out later for a kayak trip. Some days, the plan is just to be outside for a bit, then warm up after in the sauna with a view of the ocean.
This time of year, it’s less about doing everything and more about choosing what fits the mood that day.
If you do want to get out there, spring is a great time for it. Whale watching starts to pick up, bears are back along the shoreline, and the water feels busy again. You can head out to explore quiet inlets with our Remote Kayaking tour, go Fishing, or make the trip out to Hot Springs Cove. If you’re wanting that bucket list tour, the Remote Floating Sauna or our Ultimate Adventure would be unforgettable.
That’s really the reason to come this time of year. There’s more room to move, more flexibility in your days, and a version of Tofino that feels a bit more relaxed. You’re not working around crowds or trying to fit everything in. You just pick a direction for the day and go from there.
