Visit Wanachus-Hilthuuis (Meares Island) Tribal Park and The Big Tree Trail, a Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation’s flagship visitor experience and learn about its cultural and historical significance. Enjoy your lunch while immersed in old growth forest with some of the largest trees in Canada. Once you are back on board the vessel, return to pull your crab trap before heading home to the dock.

- Looking for something for a larger group then Blackfish is for you, a 30-foot covered vessel, which can hold up to 12 passengers. This vessel comes with an onboard bathroom and a viewing deck out back.

Please take a moment to prepare for your trip by obtaining a mandatory BC tidal fishing license (minimum 1- day). On this trip you will get to pull crustacean traps.

Nestled within the ancestral lands of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, the Big Tree Trail graces Wanachus-Hilthuuis (Meares Island) Tribal Park. A sanctuary of natural wonder, this trail unveils the majestic presence of Western Redcedar trees, some standing proudly for up to 1,500 years. In the tapestry of Tla-o-qui-aht culture, these ancient trees served as indispensable resources, providing sustainably harvested wood for the creation of totem poles, longhouses, and traditional canoes.
Embarking on the journey along the trail, visitors encounter the awe-inspiring Hanging Garden, where the largest Western Red Cedar, though appearing lifeless, thrives as the Cedar Tree of Life. With an impressive 18-meter width and an estimated age of 2,000 years, this venerable giant stands as one of the oldest living witnesses to time, nurturing an ecosystem of diverse trees and plants.
The tale of Meares Island unfolds with a chapter of environmental activism in the early 80s. Threatened by the imminent specter of clear-cut logging, a coalition of impassioned Tofino residents, environmentalists, and the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations united against the formidable timber industry. This rallying cry ignited the “War of the Woods,” echoing through the Queen Charlottes and culminating in the largest act of peaceful disobedience in Canadian history. Today, the stewardship of Meares Island rests in the capable hands of the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Guardians, a testament to the enduring spirit of preservation and community.

If you want to get intimate with the natural surroundings of Tofino you will not be disappointed.
Whales can be viewed year-round, but the strongest season begins in May, when a mind-blowing 20,000 grey whales swim past Tofino’s sandy shores. They’re intent on their annual migration from the Baja Peninsula to Alaska’s Bering Strait. You can expect to see whales until the end of October.
We are respectful of the current regulations and stay at a 100 meter distance. Sometimes though, as whales are curious animals, they swim closer to us but we always try our best to not disturb them if we can.
